The lines on the neck are a bit more difficlut to deal with but for the lines around the mouth typically respond well to Botox or now there’s Dysport as well. The downside is that there may be some residual weakness to moving the mouth with either Botox or Dysport and the plastic and cosmetic surgeon doing the injections must not use too much or too strong of a Botox mixtrure or weakness and a relative inability to move the mouth will most certainly occur. I use a special dilution for this purpose that’s highly effective and when done in a serial fashion about 4-6 months apart, even deep radial lines can be softened to a much higher degree than that acheived using any form of Laser or Chemical peel….and without the downtime and side-effects both offer. The best thing to reduce the vertical lip lines is Botox or Dysport. If done correctly, the lines around the lips will flaten while still allowing the mouth to move properly. For Botox and Dysport, I typically do a full treatment, repeat that full treatment with a booster at 1 month and then treat about every 6 months. Lasers and deep peels can’t penetrate the skin deep enough to remove the lip lines without creating unwanted pigment or texture changes within the skin.

It depends on how many, how deep and how long these lines are. For the past 20 years, I have used a special dilution of Botox for this area and have injected between 8 and 12 units, as a maximum amount,
to the upper or lower lip at one time. This gives a nice result but still allows the mouth to function normally. For all my Botox patients, I recommend a full dose booster treatment at 1 month followed by
re-treatments at 4-6 month intervals. This continues to weaken the muscle(s) that are causing the unwanted lines and wrinkles. During the follow up treatments, I target other areas of the lines, around
the mouth, so the entire line eventually softens. Using this technique, I have been able to soften severe peri-oral lines around the mouth that are 1 inch in length and keep them from returning. In my
opinion, this is a much more effective way of treating these lines than any type of laser resurfacing or chemical peel.
