Anne Marie,

Typically if the chin implant is removed after several months the tissues, of the chin, would return to normal. If a very large (thick) chin implant remains in the tissues for a year or longer...it's possible that stretching of the tissue will occur. If this happens and the chin is subsequently removed, the chin may droop creating a "witches chin".

Anne Marie,

It's very early for you to panic over the look of your chin following a chin implant. You didn't mention whether the chin implant was placed through the mouth or from an incision under the chin. Chin Implants take about 1 month, in my hands, for the majority of the initial swelling to resolve....so give yourself a few more weeks. I don't personally like, or use SAMS (gortex) or medpore implants as they become incorporated into the tissues and or bone of the face. I prefer silastic cheek and chin implants but I regress.

Because I didn't see you or pictures of you before the chin implant and I don't have the exact dimensions (size and thickness) of the implant that your plastic and cosmetic surgeon used, it's impossible for me to tell you whether or not your chin looks over projected as a result of the surgery. It is ,as i have have mentioned here numerous times, not ethical for me to intervene in another plastic and cosmetic surgeons case during the initial post-operative period. You should have a discussion with your plastic and cosmetic surgeon about your concerns and hopefully your fears will be addressed. In either case, you may consider waiting for several months before you make a decision about removing the chin implant. The tissues need that time to heal before they could undergo the removal operation.

Hi Dr. Palmer,

I'd also like to add two questions that I haven't seen addressed in general. What are the ramifications of chin implant removal after neck lipo considering the area has been traumatized by both? Will healing be less optimal because of the lipo? In other words, is there a higher chance or even possibly a lesser chance of sagging or disfigurement once the implant is removed?

Also, would you possibly be interested in seeing before/after photos of someone who had a very good face before the implant? I am interested in your thoughts and what you would have personally recommended or whether an implant would have been a part of your recommendation.

Thanks again,
Ann Marie

Dear Dr. Palmer,
First I want to say that after perusing your website I am very impressed with your aesthetic vision and professional expertise.

Last Tuesday I had lower eyelid surgery. Additionally, the doctor recommended a small chin implant (5 mm) to elongate my heart shaped face, and contouring my profile with neck lipo. So far the eyes are coming along nicely but I am regretting the chin implant and possibly the neck lipo. However, I am wondering if the neck lipo sans implant would have made my face look slightly longer anyway because the area would have less fat.

How long does it really take to see the full results of a chin implant? Is is possible to know at less than two weeks out that you really can't stand your chin implant? My face looks a bit gaunt and sickly and at the 3/4 angle I look a bit witchy. I know that my neck is still healing and the tightness is pulling my face down a bit.

I'd like to add that I'm 37 and am used to being mistaken for being in my twenties. Also, my chin was not recessed and I am now regretting changing the structure of my face. I already feel that I'd like to have the implant removed but considering that my surgeon has only removed one implant in his 21 year career, I don't know if he's had any practice.

Thank you Dr Palmer.

Mary,

The sub-malars, make the face appear too angular in my opinion. Yes, they can be removed and if you do not wish the cheeks augmented with malar implants (not sub-malar) soft tissue fillers like Radiesse or Perlane would do the trick. The key, with the fillers, as with cheek implants is the aesthetic vision to place them in the proper place in the right amount. You could have the implants removed and the filler placed at the same time to avoid any unwanted sagging.

Dr Palmer,

I'm 35 and had small sub malar implants put in 2 years ago. I would like them removed. I know there could be some sagging. What can be done to reduce sagging after cheek implant removal? Would a filler help or anything else?

Thanks,
Mary

Anna,

I do many cheek and chin implants and patients sometimes develop bruising that surfaces a week after the procedure.
However, for specific instructions, you should contact the plastic and cosmetic surgeon that did your surgery.

Hello Dr Palmer,

I had cheek implants and Buccal fat pad removal done approximately one week ago in san francisco.
The thing that worries me now is that my left cheek implant is VERY Much more swollen and hard to feel as compared to my right cheek implant!
And 3 days ago i developed a yellowish bruise on my left cheek as well.
There is a little pain on my left cheek, but i wouldn't say it is tremendous pain.
I doubt it is infection as i have no signs of having an infection other then the swelling and that teensy bit of pain.
Do you think it is Hematoma?
In addition to any advice that you can give me, should i use warm or cold compresses at this point of time?

I really do hope to hear from you soon, i am very worried.

Thank you for the advice page Dr. Palmer & have a good day.

Regards
Anna

William,

Tingling after a chin implant and then removal may be an ndication that the nerve is coming back which can continue for up to 2 years following the last surgery.

Dr. Palmer:
Our daughter is still having tingling sensations in her chin following a large silicone chin implant placed almost 10 months ago and removed almost 5 months ago--both through the mouth. Do we need to be concerned or is this a good thing? Could the tingling help resolve her upper lip which is still a little asymmetric?
We appreciate your reply!
