Nip This Tuck That

March 7, 2006: I saw the lady that had+�-�the Tummy Tuck+�-�yesterday…see that post…for her first post-op visit.+�-� She has 2 bulb drains+�-�under the skin over the abdomen to remove any excess blood and serous fluid. These typically remain in for 3-4 days after the surgery.+�-� She’s also wearing an abdominal binder. It’s like a girdle that goes across the abdomen and gives some compression to the surgical area.+�-� She’s slightly bent over…we pulled and removed excess skin and patients usually can stand upright at about 1 week after the surgery.+�-� The muscles are a bit sore…we tighten them along the entire abdomen…that’s what gives the nice tight flat appearance to the abdomen after the surgery.+�-� But all in all she looks fantastic and she’s going to be thrilled.+�-�

Now I don’t want to burst any+�-�bubbles so close to Hollywood’s big night but it seems that the celebs are getting a liitle help in the digital realm.+�-� That’s right, yours truly, the good doctor, has administered more than a little help to some celebs images using $250,000 computers at a post production visual effects house.+�-� This is a kick…I use my Palmer Beauty Principles +�-�to make the images younger and more attractive…best part is there’s no bleeding, bruising or recovery time.+�-� This will be the wave of the future in TV and Movieland and you heard it here first!

The technology allows the stars faces and bodies to show effects of Botox, Radiesse, Cheek Augmentation, Rhinoplasty, Face Lifts, neck Lifts, Blepharoplasty, Browlift, Liposuction, Breast Augmentation, Tummy Tuck, Lip Augmentation and skin Care….basically all similar results tahn if the celebrities had actually and recently undergone all of those procedures.+�-� How cool is that!

Am I the only one that wonders what happened to all the plastic surgery makeover shows?+�-� They seem to have fallen off the planet despite very favorable ratings?+�-� Well it’s going around the rumor mill that lawsuits filed by, less than thrilled, makeover recipients may be the cause.+�-� I have mixed feelings about this if this turns out to be true.+�-�+�-�Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeons make no guarantees implied or otherwise (we do our+�-�best each and every time)+�-�and the people did get an awful lot of surgery for free…they did look better…so what’s their beef?+�-� Do you think this is right that they then turn around and want what?+�-� Money on top of free surgery?+�-� Seems no insiders are+�-�talking, so I guess we may never find out for sure.+�-� It’s a shame that a few people are able to completely eliminate you from seeing these types of shows.+�-�

There may be a revamped rendition of these shows in the near future using some C and D list celebrities looking to jump start their career after having Rhinoplasty, Facelift, Breast Augmentation along with some Botox, restylane, Radiesse for Cheek Augmentation and for sure some lip augmentation with Alloderm or Juvederm.+�-� Should be interesting.

I feel that the more information that you, as a consumer, can obtain…the better you are at making the correct decisions when you want to improve your appearance.+�-� It’s human nature to want to look good.+�-� I just want you to make the right choices.+�-� In my experience, the number 1 reason that people are unhappy after plastic & cosmetic surgery procedures is the fact that the wrong procedure was done aesthetically.+�-� This is a very complicated issue but read my Palmer Beauty Principles+�-� and+�-�How To Choose Your Plastic Surgeon+�-�for some really good basic information.

I had the privilege of doing a Tummy Tuck on a lovely woman this morning.+�-� You know the story, she’s had a couple of kids and the pregnacies stretched her abdominal muscles like crazy.+�-� Years later and she’s sick and tired of the pouch over her stomach and the loose skin.+�-� Not a problem.+�-� An incision is made down near the pubic area that goes from one hip to the other in the shape+�-�of+�-�a happy face.+�-� The tissue is elevated all the way up to the ribcage.+�-� The loose muscles are tightened (by the way the muscles look like a baloon that has been blown up too many times and stays stretched and thinned out even when deflated) and the extra skin (sometimes as much as 10-12 inches..or more) is removed and the whole thing is sewn closed.+�-� No, the belly button is not cut but remnains intact as we cut around it…stretch the skin over it and then make a new whole in the skin for it to reappear.+�-� It a fairly large surgery as plastic & cosmetic procedures go with an unbelievable amount of stitches….has to be hundreds.+�-� Almost all of which are dissolvable.+�-� She’ll feel sore for a couple of days and will have to take it easy for several weeks but her stomach will be flat enough to bounch quarters off of it when it’s all done and healed.+�-� Nothing else was going to give her that flat of an abdomen!+�-�

Spoke with a production company, here in town, that wants to do a reality show on my entire family….from Ashton recording her original songs and singing the National Anthem at the Staples center… since the age of 14 (over the last 3 years)…to Evan who’s on “Unfabulous” and looking forward to going to the “Kids Choice Awards” this year with the Cast of the show…to Robyn who manages the kids career and runs the office for me….still finds time to give Restylane, Botox and Collagen to many patients in my practice.+�-� I don’t think people would believe that we have so many projects going at the same time.+�-�

On top of everything else, I was contacted by a business consortium asking me to set up and oversee a plastic & cosmetic surgery clinic in the Middle East…I replied “I’m flattered but just don’t have the time.”+�-� I mean really, how much can one person do.+�-� I have my upcoming book, my TV appearances, possibly my own show, my skin care company Francis R Beverly Hills(R) and a full time practice as well as teaching the USC resident surgeons.+�-� That should be enough for any 2 people!

Well the Oscars were full of glitz and glitter as the modern day royalty ( our celebrities ) strutted their stuff down the red carpet.+�-� I, for one, still noticed some beauties that seem to have missed the news that the severely skinny, “I only eat lettuce for meals” look is unattractive.+�-� I thought that movement had undergone a justly deserved timely demise.+�-� Who thinks that is a good look?+�-� Worse, what type of message is this giving our children that idolize these young actresses?+�-� Does anyone think we, as viewers are fooled?+�-� We can tell that something is wrong when their bodies are so thin that their heads appear huge.+�-� Who’s propagating this look?+�-� Are casting directors, producers, agents insisting that these poor women starve themselves to look+�-�thin and more thin?+�-� I say enough is enough.+�-� I am an expert in beauty and I am telling you that this IS NOT ATTRACTIVE!+�-� Period!+�-� Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.

OK.+�-� Now+�-�for the beauty part of+�-�Hollywood’s biggest evening.+�-� Reese Witherspoon is just plain adorable…but Charlize Theron scored a 99 out of a possible 100 points using+�-�my Palmer Beauty Principle+�-�scale.+�-�Wow, she looks amazing.+�-� She may have been the most attractive woman at the Oscars.+�-� Winner Rachel Weisz scored solidly in the 90′s and was looking especially cute.+�-� Keira Knightley also scored a 99 out of a perfect 100 and is drop dead gorgeous.+�-� Full round cheeks, beautiful eyes/eyebrows and full plump lips.+�-� The top three aesthetic beauty features of the face that will make you a knockout!+�-� Speaking of knockouts, how beautiful did Jennifer Anniston look Sunday.+�-� She truly is an American Beauty.

Friday 3/3/06: Man oh man+�G��-�let+�G��G��s call the last couple of days +�G��+�Plump, Fill and Freeze+�G��-�. It seems that the whole world was here getting Restylane, Collagen or Radiesse to their lips, various folds, lines and wrinkles. I put enough Botox in faces to single handedly raise the price of Allergan stock (Allergan is the company that makes Botox for the US). There+�G��G��ll be a whole lotta smooth and plump faces for the Academy Awards this Sunday+�G��-�.Botox like all of Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery is an art, so if you see someone with that frozen +�G��+�I+�G��G��ve had to much Botox look+�G��-�+�G��-�we didn+�G��G��t do it! I+�G��G��ve been doing Botox for almost 12 years+�G��-�and it+�G��G��s totally slick and amazing, but like all things, you can have too much of a good thing and look bad! Think Quality not quantity and you should do fine. Robyn, my wife has a Masters in Nursing and also does Botox and soft-tissue fillers like Restylane, Collagen and Radiesse+�G��-�In fact she does most of it since I+�G��G��m usually in the OR doing surgery. However, we both use my own special dilution formula and method of doing injecting the Botox.

The British film crew was here yesterday afternoon and it was a really cute piece. A young (in her mid twenties) aspiring actress was here to have me evaluate her appearance and share with her what Hollywood looks for in a female superstar. Of course, I used the Palmer Beauty Principles and gave her sound solid advice on how she could be star quality beautiful. I can+�G��G��t promise, of course, that she+�G��G��d get movie or TV role but she definitely would be more attractive. I suggested improvements in the Top three areas that I refer to as the +�G��+�one-two-three Beauty punch+�G��-�+�G��-�the shape of the cheeks, eye area and lips+�G��-�..explained in detail in my Palmer Beauty Principles. The producer asked me if anyone had ever approached me to do a reality show about my family+�G��-�.My daughter is almost 18 and has an amazing voice written and recorded several original song with a producer that worked with the band Maroon Five, my 15 year-old son has a recurring role on a Nickelodeon sitcom called +�G��+�Unfabulous+�G��-� and my wife is intelligent, strong and beautiful+�G��-�+�G��-�I laughed and said yes+�G��-�a couple of producers were actually working on that show idea as we speak.
That doesn+�G��G��t include the Doctor 90210 shoot or the new show that is being proposed for future development+�G��-�..sometimes I get dizzy with all my irons in the fire. But I am a Vigo and in particular a Virgo Dragon. I am the most happy when I have many, many projects and I thrive being able to juggle them all! Thursday 3/2/06: Yikes!! A busy day today.+�-� The British film crew is coming this afternoon+�G��-�time to get my TV face on.+�-� Remember, I promised myself always to have fun doing these shows.+�-� I am curious what the aspiring actress will look like and what she+�G��G��s going to ask me to do for her to improve her appearance?+�-� I+�G��G��ll fill you in on Friday.

Saw a consult yesterday afternoon after a full day in the OR.+�-� She was almost 50 and says she dates men that are 35.+�-� She asked for my advice in ways that she could look younger.+�-� A reasonable request.+�-� After taking a look at her, I recommended removing the excess skin of the lower eyelids, a minilift and some Botox to soften the vertical lines around her mouth.+�-� It always amazes me that people feel that the eyes make them look more or less attractive.+�-� My Palmer Beauty Principles show that they eyes make you look tired, when aged, and not tired when there are no excesses of skin or fat around the eyes+�G��-�but they don+�G��G��t have the aesthetic power to make you more attractive per se.+�-� She+�G��G��ll look almost 10 years younger after those procedures with about 1 day recovery.+�-� Until that pill+�G��-�you know the beauty pill that we take once a year to make us look 25+�G��-�.until that pill is developed+�G��-�these simple procedures are the best way to take years off of your face.+�-� When combined with Radiesse to re-shape the cheeks into a more youthful position+�G��-�.you can get real beauty enhancement.

Tuesday 2/28/06:+�-� Debugging both websites+�G��-�aargh, what a pain.+�-� Skin care website+�-�+�-� http://www.FRBH.Com has an old version on the servers and the plastic surgery site http://www.drfpalmer.com has broken contact links+�G��-�.who said this was the golden age of communication?+�-� It+�G��G��s not enough to be a well trained plastic & cosmetic surgeon, I have to be a techy as well+�G��-�.I don+�G��G��t think so.+�-� No offense to the techies+�G��-�.they+�G��G��re seriously way smarter than I am when it comes to the internet, computers and html code.

Spoke with my agent.+�-� The one sheet for the new show looks good.+�-� Hope it works out+�G��-�that will be exciting!+�-� Shooting for another show +�G��+�Pop Culture+�G��-� is scheduled this Thursday with the British film crew.+�-� The show is slated to begin airing this June.+�-� I guess it+�G��G��s just part of the biz anymore.+�-� I have to be camera ready.+�-� Truth is, I+�G��G��m a bit of a ham and really enjoy all of it.+�-� Man, I can remember, the first time I had a TV camera stuck in my face+�G��-�talk about freaky.+�-� It+�G��G��s amazing how you just get used to it and calm down with experience.+�-� I try to always have fun with whatever show or film crew is here+�G��-�.the biggest thing for me to remember is to just relax.+�-� The last thing I want is to be a stuffy Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon because that+�G��G��s just not me.+�-� I+�G��G��m the guy next door+�G��-�just with 10 years training and an emotionally charged high pressure job that I totally love.

Saw the patient we did a Browlift, nasolabial fold micro-liposuction and used Radiesse to fill out her cheeks using my +�G��+�Palmer Beauty Principles+�G��-�+�G��-�she looks almost 10 years younger.+�-� I am so happy for her+�G��-�she+�G��G��s thrilled and so am I.+�-� This is so cool!+�-� After 16 years, I still get excited to see my patients more beautiful and attractive.+�-� Thank you Lord for giving me the privilege to make people happy!

Monday 2/27/06: Well here we are. The inaugural launch of a glimpse into my life+�G��-�.wow, no pressure. I have so much that I want to share with you, that I don’t know where to start.+�-�+�-�Hopefully, I can give you some insight into what it+�G��G��s like to be me. Christian, family man, father of 2 teens (please pray for me), artist, writer, aspiring TV Star (that+�G��G��s an entire story in itself) and the gatekeeper to my patients beauty+�G��-�their identity+�G��-�an awesome responsibility that I take very seriously. I believe that a truly gifted Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon must have: The Eyes of an Artist, The Hands of an Angel and The Heart of a Lion. The artist must know how to make you more attractive. The Angel treats your tissue gently and with respect. The Lions Heart gives me the strength to hold someone+�G��G��s identity in the palm of my hands and allows me to cope with this awesome responsibility. Welcome to my world! I am wrestling with my son one moment and the next, I am laying open the face of a 45 year old lovely woman who wants nothing more than for me to make her look more attractive. She has a loving family that cares deeply for her and wants only the best for her+�G��-�and the pressure mounts!

I was contacted by another talk show wanting to do a makeover. The woman, for the makeover, had lost a great deal of weight, had a ton of surgery elsewhere for sagging skin +�G��+�everywhere+�G��-� and still wants to look better. This breaks my heart, but she+�G��G��s never going to look good and I+�G��G��m not sure that another tummy tuck, thigh lift or arm lift will make a significant difference. The tough part is breaking the bad news to the patient, who desperately wants to look normal, and to the TV Show Producer, who wants to put together a dramatic show. I feel badly, but I think I+�G��G��ll have to pass on this one.

Robyn, had me look at numerous photos from potential patients, from all over the world, asking for plastic and cosmetic surgery via e-mail. I am still amazed at how many hundreds of e-mails we get each day. It floors me every time I think about the number of these initial contacts that wind up having surgery with us. I never imagined this would happen. Not in my wildest dreams. I wrote the original material for the website over 8-9 years ago just as a way for people to get a sense of who and what I was. Maybe, that+�G��G��s why it works? It+�G��G��s like speaking with me+�G��-�only from the comfort of your house computer.

Saw a very hip woman, doctors wife, in her late 50+�G��G��s who hasn+�G��G��t done any plastic surgery to this point in her life+�G��-�she+�G��G��s looking for a little +�G��+�spruce up+�G��-� and wanted to speak with me about Contour Threads

Thread Lift This is always an interesting conversation. Patients don+�G��G��t want any incisions but are amazed when I go through the logic of that means +�G��-�no skin is removed as well+�G��-�. She finally realized that one of my custom Minilifts Face Lift with lower Bleph Blepharoplasty was the ticket. She+�G��G��s going to look amazing+�G��-�..7 years younger+�G��-�what a cool job I have.

Assisted on a Rhinoplasty this afternoon. The patient wanted the bridge of her nose built up, so we used a dorsal solid silastic (silicone) implant. I personally would have asked the patient to consider using Radiesse. Radiesse would have been done as an office treatment with a simple skin injection. No surgery, no anesthesia, no recovery and the material lasts up to 2 years. Not my decision however. That+�G��G��s what makes Plastic Surgery an art and not cookbook+�G��-�the way each surgeon looks at each individual patient and decides what to do or not do. No 2 decisions will ever be completely alike.

Drove down to Irvine to review the prototype device for the think tank group. If this thing works, the way we think it will…we are going to make a whole lot of people very happy. I am hired by an East Coast think tank that brings emerging new technologies to physicians and the public in the field of Plastic Surgery and beauty.
