Silicone injections!

mid-afternoon of April 20th, 2006

Saw patient today that had silicone injections to the face years ago.  Silicone was great for years and then things started to go wrong.  Really wrong.  The face started to look deformed and she searched for someone to remove the silicone.  Silicone is injected in minute droplets and is permanent….the body places collagen around the silicone droplets and the two together account for the effects noted after silicone injections.  Trouble is that silicone has shown that it can migrate from the places it was injected, like in this patients case.  Silicone can also cause some benign tumors called siliconomas.  Taking all this into account what’s a body to do if they don’t want surgery but want the benefits of a soft tissue filler?

Radiesse (calcium hydroxyapetite) is a good alternative.  Here in my Beverly Hills practice, Radiesse is the #2 most commonly injected substance after Botox Injections.  I love how Radiesse can be injected to mold and sculpt the face similar to what I do with Facial Implants (Cheek and Chin Implants).  The company says it lasts 2-5 years.  We tell patients 2 years to be on the conservative side.  After that time, the material will be slowly removed by the body and you’ll loose the effects.  OK, so you have more injected.  That’s cool.

If you’re looking to fill in the lines around the mouth Radiesse, Restylane or Collagen are all good soft tissue fillers.  Radiesse lasts longer, needs to be injected into the deep fatty tissue while Restylane and Collagen can be placed more superficially in the skin layers.  Each has it’s pros and cons and it’s worth the time and money to pay for a consultation with a Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon or an experienced Dermatologist to discuss your particular needs and treatment options.

If you’re looking to plump up your lips, Restylane or Collagen can be placed along the border of the lips for a fuller look.  These are not meant to be injected into the body of the lips as this could cause a compromise in the blood supply to the lip.  If that happens, part of the lip(s) will turn black and die.  Not a good thing!  For a more permanent Lip Augmentation, think about Alloderm.  I’ve used Alloderm for Lip Augmentation for over 10 years and this is the gold standard, in my opinion, for Lip Enhancement.  It is a surgical procedure and can’t be done with injections.  A strip of Alloderm is placed under the red portion of the lip and unlike Restylane and Collagen does has the ability to increase the size of the body of the lips.  I’ve found that it lasts about 7 years.

Finally.  Please avoid going to other countries, like Mexico, for silicone (silica) injections.  This has become popular the last several years with some treatments costing as little as $50.  You do not know what you are getting and for that reason alone, in my opinion, they are best avoided.  On a similar note….I hear stories of people (not Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeons) flying to large cities from Paris or elsewhere…renting hotel rooms where they will inject people with silicone and other exotic substances.  Once again, you don’t know what you are getting and just because your friend Suszy had it done last month and looks great is no guarantee that all heck won’t break loose on your face 10 years down the road.  It’s just not worth the risk….trust me!

  1. hi my names jenn and i had silicone injected in my face..although thank goodness ive never had any migration…i feel like my lips look too big and it made my face look very weird. i wanted to know if there were options for having it removed. im desperate ive even tried corticostroid injections but they didnt help…it only caused indentations…any suggestions?

  2. Hi Jenn,

I understand. Problem is Silicone can never really be removed. If you want your lips made smaller, there is a procedure that can be done to do this. I suggest you send us a jpeg of your lips or call and make an appointment for a consultation.

  3. My lips look great after the silicone injections even 5 years later. However; I am terrified of the migration and possible permanent muscle and nerve damage. Is there any board certified plastic surgeon or company that is frontiering in silicone lip removal and reconstruction?

  4. Hey Sean,

Yeah, that’s the way silicone can be in the lips. It can look great for years and then create problems…none of which I hope you ever experience. However, silicone injected into the lips, face and body does pose potential risks, some of which you mentioned and no, there are no solutions currently for it’s removal. My advice is to avoid silicone in the lips…use Alloderm instead or one of the temporary fillers like Restylane or Collagen. Do not use silicone in the face but consider Cheek Implants, Chin Implant or Radiesse Injections to mold and shape the face. Silicone is just not worth the risk, in my opinion. Good luck and God Bless. Dr. Francis Palmer

  5. I suppose this means Silikon 1000 too? I was tempted to get silikon until I read all this. No one wants to mess up their face.
I did not know that Restylane could not be injected in the meaty part of the lips. They do it here where I live, and now I understand why lips have a bluish color for so long after I had it done. The circulations must have been cut off some.

  6. Silikon 1000 is a variation of Silicone and in my opinion should be avoided. Yes, there are people that will do all sorts of things today in Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery but that doesn’t make it safe or correct! Remember, “Buyer Beware”. Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  7. I just went to a board certified plastic surgeon in Chicago who encouraged me to inject silicone because I complained about how short lived collagen was. She injected the silicone and told me how safe it is and that it lasts forever. After the procedure they had me sign the consent forms because they forgot since I switched procedures at the last minute. Now I am terrified after reading all the reports!!!! I guess there is nothing I can do. ???

  8. Hi Carol,
You should express any and all concerns that you have, now that you read the consent form, with your surgeon. He/she’s really the only person that knows how much and where the silicone was placed…

  9. Sixteen years ago I had silicone injected into my lips. Over time, I have developed tiny tiny white blisters, fortunately, they have been low enough. I am terrified of future disfigurement, or even developing cancer in the face from it.

I’m going to see a doctor in two weeks. He told me through his receptionist, that the silicone has to come out.

I’m very afraid, do you have any words of advice.

    P.S. I have had no migration……..so far.

  10. J.D.,

You may want to see several plastic and cosmetic surgeons about the silicone in your lips before acting. Yes, silicone freely injected into tissues like the lips and cheeks can create problems in the future but….and here’s the impoortant point…the plastic and cosmetic surgeon, in my opinion, should not create a deformity by attempting to remove the silicone that’s greater than the problems the silicone has created.

In other words, you have some small white lumps on your lips that may be little beads of silicone. These should be removed as well as any silicone that you can feel and is easilly found. YOU WILL NEVER REMOVE ALL THE SILICONE AND THIS IS WIDELY KNOW BY EXPERIENCED PLASTIC AND COSMETIC SURGEONS.

Please spread the word to anyone that will listen that silicone should not be freely injected into the lips, cheeks, chin or anywhere else. The risk of problems years later is just too high.

You may want to look at Alloderm to plump up your lips if they look thin or have depressions after the silicone is removed. Read more here:

  11. I’ve read all kinds of scary things about silicone injections in the lips , I had my lips done 7 years ago with silicone and I love it , they’re not too big and i’v never had problem and neither have any of my 5 girl friends that also had it done ..it was done from a well known plastic surgeon …

  12. Hey Yvonne,

I’m thrilled for you but believe me many people have not been so lucky. I do not advise patients to take the risk of free silicone injections to the lips, face or body. Do a quick internet search on google for complications from silicone and you’ll see why I feel this way. When silicone goes wrong it can really disfigure the face. Not a good risk to take in my opinion. Better to use Alloderm in the lips.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  13. Dr do you remove silicone from the cheeks? and how much would it cost! I am not wealthy and need some help here

  14. Hey Louise,

You didn’t mention if this was a silicone cheek implant or free silicone injected into your face. In either case, I’d need to see you and/or jpeg pictures of the area before I could make any determinations. drfpalmer1@aol.com

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  15. In 1994 I had silicone injected in my lips. It was a reputable plastic surgeon who facilitated the injections. I have barely discernable little lumps on each side of my jaw thirteen years later, so far, so good. I am trying to find out if I have not developed any seriuos results by now what the chances are that the silicone injections can cause problems later. If there are future complications couldn’t the bulk of the silicone be removed from inside the bottom of the mouth leaving no visible scarring?

Thank you, a little worried in Canada.

  16. Hey Iris,

No, I’m afraid that there is no time limit of having complications from silicone injections. You said the lumps were down by the jawline…does this mean the silicone traveled there from the lips, cheeks or the nasolabial folds? This will give you some indication of how far silicone can seep in tissue.

Removing silicone beads form tissue is difficult at best. It’s difficult to find and leaves indentations in the tissue not to mention the potential damage to muscles, blood vessels and nerves during the attempt to find and isolate the silicone beads.

Having Silicone injected into the face isn’t a small deal, in my opinion, but a huge deal and something to be avoided. If you aren’t having any problems…God Bless you and leave everything alone. Don’t touch, massage or attempt to surgically remove the silicone unless and until absolutely necessary. Most importantly…tell everyone that will listen not to get silicone injections. They are TROUBLE! People are getting silicone injected in hotel rooms, in apartments and in Mexico for as little as $50. Often the silicone later is revealed to be industrial grade silicone not even suitable for tissue…..please help stop the madness.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  17. Well hello there Dr! I like others also had silicone injections.I had a little in my apples of the cheeks and the cheek bone,I do want it removed and i am considering getting it scrapped out and pulled with a cheek implant. What would you recommend?I also had injections to the buttocks and hips,”being a transgendered woman im sure you know we are the worst known for the injections.I had some the the silicone removed from my bottom and im still wanting to remove more of it.My Dr,said it was difficult but he did lipo alot of it out.I heard you can inject a liquid called cortazone to the areas and it eats up the silicone. What are your thoughts? Do you anwser any cosmetic porcedure questions.
    Thanks for your time, Denise

  18. Hey Denise,

It’s very difficult to remove all the silicone as they are very small beads that are embedded into your tissue. You want to be careful the cure is not worse than the problem you’re trying to correct. I’d have to see what your cheeks look like and where the silicone was originally injected…if it had moved, etc?

Yes, I frequently will use facial microlipo to remove some of the silicone and then place Cheek Implants to acheive an improved facial appearance. We frequently use cheek implants for transgender patients with great results.

Yes, we do make comments on plastic surgery procedures for patients all the time. Typically patients e-mail their photos as jpeg files to drfpalmer1@aol.com The office staff will then arrange a telephone consultation where we discuss the photos and my recommendations with the patient. The patients then have the option of flying here to beverly Hills for me to perform their plastic surgery procedures. We have done this for patients from all over the world for about 15 years now.

You may want to be careful getting kenalog injections as a means of removing the silicone. Kenalog is an anti-inflammatory steroid that will dissolve some of the silicone but will also dissolve your own fatty tissue which may cause unsightly depressions in your tissues. This are very difficult to correct, so be careful getting kenalog shots. Liposuction is a much safer way to remove the silicone. Remember, you’ll never get it (silicone) all out and you do not want to become deformed trying.

    Hope this helps.

  19. Hi I had Hyaluronic acid (thinner than restylane) injected into my lips a week ago I have a lump on the left side of my lip, main part of the lip. Will this settle down, or is it permanent, can it be removed. I’m very worried, I wish I didn’t have it done now.

    sunnita

  20. Hi Sunnita,

Take a deep breath….and relax. Hyaluronic Acid is a temporary filler. The lump should not be there permanently. Call the Plastic Surgeon who injected the material or whos office you had it done and ask them for more specific recommendations.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  21. Hi doc, I had silicone injections to remove my smiles lines. but it appears on the left side the doctor may have injected to much. it appears to raise a bit above my normal skin surface, about an inch long. and when i smile my face seams slightly distorted. Is this difficult to fix, and im i a candidate for kenalog or lipo? Thanks Andrew

  22. Hey Andrew,

This is silicone and very dificult to remove. You can go to the plastic surgeon, dermatologist that did the injections and ask for their advice….steroid injection is one option.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  23. hi docter,, ive been going to italy the last 6 years to a woman in naples having my cheeks,, forhead,, lines and chin pumped . i did my lips also like 5 times but stopped last year. the instant results were amazing. im a transgendered woman,, and havnt been able to afford the brow bossing,, and more expensive surgerys,, so this was a cheap quick fix. however,, after the swelling goes away ,, around 2 weeks,, theres not much filler left,,,it always disapears in my cheeks really fast,,, my lips are a little lumpy,, so i no its stayed there,,, can i remove it from my forhead in time and still undergo successful forhead contouring surgery??

  24. Vanessa,

You didn’t mention this but from the area (subject) of your post does this mean the injections were silicone? If so, this is very difficult to remove but it will not stop you from having the forehead bone shaving . The forehead bone is rasped (shaved) by lifting up the scalp and covering of the bone. The silicone was injected into the tissue way above the bone and as such the two areas may not be in contact with one another during the bone re-shaping surgery…which I have done numerous times and is quite a simple procedure.

I’m not, as you may have learned, a big fan of silicone injections….so you may wish to reconsider this strategy and wait until you can have:

  25. I had recently silicone injection around 5-6 ml in my face,,, i am so scared after what I read
what are the immediate sideeffects and long term ones?
isit possible to correct or ractify?

  26. Hi Rola,

I’m sorry. I’m not trying to frighten anyone but the fact is silicone injected into the face has issues and potential problems that should have been discussed with you by the plastic and cosmetic surgeon performing the silicone injections. I’d start by asking him/her what the potential risks are and what can be done if these happen to you. Best of luck.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  27. Hello Dr 10 years ago i did stupid thing in my life. i did chik and chin injecktion. What i ask you is there any possiblelity to reshape or to make it look better. I don’t want to have my old again. what i want just to look a bith nature. thanks for your respon.

  28. Yeni,

There is a possibility that the tissues of the cheeks can be reduced with micro-liposuction. The chin area can possibly be reduced with soft tissue excision under the chin but nothing can be done for the front of the chin.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  29. Hi Dr. Palmer, I am yet another trangender that made rash decisions. I had injections (silicone) in my face and breast. I have been trying for years to find someone who can help corect this. I know the silicone cannot be completely removed but I would like to have a softer look. Is this something you would feel comfortable doing. I have already talked with several plastic surgeans locally and only 1 would be willing to work on me and the truth is after talking with him and seeing some of his work, I really don’t feel comfortable with him. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

  30. Teri,

It’s OK in my opinion to make mistakes as long as you learn from them and move on. Yes, there are typically ways to soften any face in almost any circumstance. It would be best for you to come for a consultation in person but you can also e-mail jpeg pictures of your face to us for review and then schedule a telephone consultation where my findings and suggestions are discussed with you. Our e-mail address is drfpalmer1@aol.com our office number is 310-652-9583.

    Have faith.

  31. Hi i had radiesse injected near my cheek bones into a small scar i had. Im still not happy with the results as it sticks out like a bump and its been almost about a year and a half and the radiesse has still not been able to dissolve. Its makin me feel very unhappy and i am thinking of getting it surgically removed as there is no other way to remove it not even steroids. I was wondering which doctor or specialist do i need to contact in order to get the radiesse removed totally from the skin. Do i need contact a specialist surgeon who deals with this? How long are the radiesse affects i hear they are like 2-5 years. If i was to just leave the area in concern alone will the radiesse just slowly dissapear after some time or will there always be some left deposited in that particular area?

  32. Kaz,

Are you sure you had Radiesse Injected and not some other filler that’s permanent like Artecol or Silicone? Radiesse lasts 12-18 months not 2-5 years. First contact the plastic surgeon that injected the filler and be sure what was injected. Depending on the material injected, contact the manufacturer’s rep (get the name and contact from the plastic surgeon who injected the material). Contact the company rep, voice your concerns and ask for a referral for a plastic surgeon to correct the issue.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  33. Hi thanks for your reply it was definately Radiesse. I am going to see some plastic surgeons regarding this matter, thankyou.

  34. You’re welcome. You may want to contact your local Radiesse (Bioform) rep as well. They can be very helpful.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  35. Hi doc , Ive written to you before about silcone injections that i would like to have removed. As much as i would like to come to you unfortunatley i live in New york City, would you be able to recommend a doc that performs microliposuction here thanks for your time Andrew

  36. Andrew,

I don’t know anyone in particular. Try asking your friends. There are thousands of plastic and cosmetic surgeons and I just gave up trying to keep track of which one does which procedures over the past 20 years.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  37. Dear Dr,

I made a mistake 9 months ago, when a model friend brought me to some lady’s house to do ‘collagen’ injection. It was really cheap, I had 4 jabs to my cheeks. After the injection, it felt very plump and when touched, it felt like have bags of water underneath the skin.

I was very worried, and regretted immediately. I immediately seek a certified doctor for help and was told injections can’t be removed. I was so worried, but was told 6 months shouldn’t have collagen anymore.

I didn’t worry until few days ago, (now 9 months) there still feel like have bags under my skin. I don’t know what was injected into me, I was very scared and went to see two plastic surgeons who asked me to do MRI scan. They told me they have seen many cases like mine, and is probably silicone injected which can’t be removed. According to them, over the years, it will harden and become lumps which can’t be removed.

I am hyperventaling now, I can’t sleep I can’t think I don’t know what to do. One of the doctors suggested to do vasor lipo and try to get some silicone out (if MRI scans show that).

Do you think it will help?

I really appreciate your advise. I don’t know who to turn to for help.

  38. May,

OK, first thing let’s take a deep breath and calm down. Let’s not worry about things in the future until they become an issue. Can you see that the material is hard or lumpy under the skin or are you just worried that this might occur?

If there are visible lumps, then you might consider some type of microlipo or fillers to soften the look. I’d need to see pictures or you in person to make further assessment and recommendations. An MRI is probably overkill and you should figure that you got silicone unless proven otherwise. Silicone is clear while collagen is white in the syringe in case you saw what was injected.

    drfpalmer1@aol.com for e-mailed pictures.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  39. Dear Doctor,

The material is currently lumpy underneath the skin. I still look ok, however worried about future problems.

    Doc,
Can I seek your expertise? I called the beautician again and she said she injected “plant collagen” which would last up to 3 years, made in Japan. Is that true in the market, such thing exists?

2ndly, a friend suggested I inject cordicosteroid. Does it help?

    Appreciate your advise. Thanks.

    regards,
    May

  40. Dear Dr Francis,

I left you a message earlier on, but it did not appear on this site, I have no idea why.

Hence I am writing to you again, hope you may advise on this matter:

    1. plant collagen. Have you experienced such thing in the market? I called the beautician and she said what was injected was plant collagen and she got it supplied from Japan. It’s supposed to last for 1-3 years, the collagen will bind with our tissues?

    2. corticosteroid injection, what is it? will it help get rid of the foreign material?

    3. last but not least, if do vaser lipo or micro lipo, it gets rid of fat, but it does not get rid of the unwanted material, hence is the only purpose to help soften the look? Does that mean down the road few years time, the hardening and lumpiness will still probably happen?

    Thanks for your advise.

    May

  41. May,

I think at this stage you should be seen in consultation for further review of your face. I’m unaware of any plant collagen in existence or being approved for use in the US as a soft tissue filler. I am amazed that you’d allow a beautician to inject your face with anything. You could have microlipo or kenalog injections as a way of decreasing the effects of the material.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  42. I had silicone injectin 5 years ago. it was ok until 9 months ago,I saw lumps under my right eye. and y cheek bone slook bigger.I called my doctor ,and he told me come to removesome of it asmuch as itis possible, because it is impossible to remove all of it.now I am worreid about my eyes.will any damagecome to my eye after removing? my frien went to same doctor and he removed some of silicone from her lips.if I do microlipo, does it remove silicone or fat of my face?
    thanks

  43. Fafar,

Microlipo will remove the fat from the area. I’d ask the doctor that did the silicone injections about possible eye complications from the silicone injection or the intended removal. As you can see from my blog, I don’t recommend silicone injections into the face.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  44. Hello Doc,
I’ve had a pea size silicone injected into an acne scar 10 years ago to smooth out its look on my right cheek near my nose. After numerous chemical peels and laser resurfacing procedures my skin is thinner and firmer in look., However , now it feels and looks like I have a cyst or boil under my skin thats unsightly. All your help and recommendation in assisting me to have this removed is appreciated. I hate the way it feels and looks, can I inject something into it to dissolve it away or surgically have it removed or? Please help in recommending a logical solution. Thank you,Mrs Palmer

  45. Mrs Palmer,

I guess we are related somewhere down the line. You may want to consider a localized kenalog injection into the area which may cause it to decrease. You could also have it opened and aspirated to remove the silicone.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  46. Hi. I am an HIV infected, 51 year old male considering silicone injections to plump up my concave temples. I’ve had Sculptra for the cheeks with great success (just one treatment required). However, I was told Sculptra wouldn’t be suitable for a fairly large area of the temples where the skin is thin. I’ve been told silicone is the best, but your warnings, and those of my dermatologist, have made me wary. I’ve had a small amount of Juvederm injected along the outside edge above my eyebrows to hide my shrinking temples, but it would cost thousands to do the entire temple regions and only lasts 6 - 9 months. Do you have any suggestions?

  47. Bob,

I think your best bet is either Scupltra or Radiesse. Both will work in that area. The expense is what it is and shouldn’t be a reason to have something that could potentially cause problems (silicone).

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  48. What can be used to fill out the body if silicone injections are not to be used?

  49. Sharon,

    Radiesse or Sculptra.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  50. Hello, My name is Jenifer and I am a transsexual woman. I wanted to know if silicone injection or something else can be used to achieve bigger hips? Thank you.

  51. Jennifer,

Silicone has many side effects, so you may want to find another option. Other then fat transfer, which would have a marginal effect…I’m not sure what else you could do to get larger hips?

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  52. Dear Dr. Palmer,

I had Bioplastique injections to the chin and lower jaw area 8 years ago. Now I would like to remove it (at least partly) and to augment my chin using solid silicone implants or my own bone.
Can it be done and what are the risks?
    Can Bioplastique be removed?
As far as I know, Bioplastique is a gel made of hard silicone particles. Does it make any difference to liquid silicone?
    Which complications can it cause?
    Thank you very much.

    Eli

  53. Eli,

Some of the bioplastique may be able to be removed if it’s within a fatty tissue layer and it’s in an area where it’s anatomically safe to do microliposuction. You should be able to have a solid silicone implant placed in the chin area. You can send pics and schedule phone and or personal consult at drfpalmer1@aol.com or 310-652-9583.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  54. I am really thinking about silicone injections to my buttocks and my hips. I just really need to find someone who could do it. I am really scared of the possible risk though but I feel that silicone injections will allow me to get my butt as big as I like. Where as with butt imolants it sounds very painful and the brazilian butt lift doesn’t seem like you can make the butt that big. And I want it a really nice size. Any suggestions?

  55. Keisha,

I’m afraid that I don’t except not to have free silicone injected into your tissues.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  56. Hi.

I hope your not offended by my question. I was reading up on silicone injections into the penis. Does the product you were talking about work for that purpose? I hope you won’t think I’m just posting this as joke. We as a society accept a womans right to a breast implant, to “help her self image” Well guess what, men have the same issues as women and I for one would like to have a bit wider penis.
    Thanks for your thoughts
    Perry

  57. Perry,

You may want to avoid silicone injections to the penis…I am not aware of Radiesse being used in that area but there may be some MD’s that will do that for you. I do know that Alloderm has been used to increase the girth. I don’t do that work, so that’s about the extent of my experience on the subject. Good luck and do your homework…just as you are doing.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  58. Hello,

Is it safe to inject Silikon 1000 into the buttock area? I know of someone who has had had this done twice and is pleased with the result. I am just a bit afraid of the short/long term risks.

  59. Annie,

I do not recommend people have silicone injections anywhere. Look online at possible complications and you may want to rethink having it as well. Yes, there’s always someone who had siliocne injected and loves…no problems. Trust me there are silicone injection nightmares as well..I know they come here, call us and e-mail us after having silicone injected elsewhere abd they come from all over the world. Some I can help, some I can’t.

Bottom line…it’s not worth the risk in my opinion.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  60. Dear Dr F Palmer,
I had a serious question. I had a very fast metabolism, and I am not able to gain any feminine fat at all. I’d like to have rounder bottom and hips, but I do not guess any effective soft tissue filters beside silicone.
    Thank a lot, Diane

  61. Diane,

Yeah, I can understand your frustration but other than buttock implants, which I don’t do, I can’t think of anything that would help. Siliocone is harmful and you can find out the serious side effects by searching silicone adverse effects on the internet.

  62. Hello what I am reading is very upsetting to me , my brother left 20 years ago and decided to live as a woman. he had silicone put into his face , breast, and bottom, now he has decided to return to living as a man, living as a transvestite has left him jobless and home less. Studies show that 90 % of transvestites are homeless because people look at them as a risk for jobs. With all that said now he wishes to retun to living as a man . How can he have this work removed ? He is a beautiful woman. And clearly dosnt look like a man. Please help if you can.

  63. Laura,

I understand the frustration but somethings can’t be undone no matter how much we want that to happen. The silicone can’t be removed but your brother’s face and breasts can be made to appear more masculine. Shaping the cheeks, chin and jawline for a more angular, rugged look would do the trick. The breasts may require surgery to remove breast tissue.

  64. HI,

My name is cynthia and i am a 18 year old transgender woman. I have been taking hormones for 8 months now, but have not seen too many rsults. I am considering getting silicone injected into my butt, and hip area. I wanted to know if you had any safe ways to achieve a more feminine body? Like most young transgender woman i do not have too much information on prices of plastic surgery?

  65. Cynthia,

I am afraid that I am unaware of any safe ways to increase the shape of the hips. Buttock implants are available and would be a better option, in my opinion, than free silicone injected into the tissue.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  66. Hello Dr. well what I dont understand is that no one here has said anthing about shifting, cancer ect… so my question is what can go wrong with silicone other than the person injecting it doing it incorrectly, especially after the silicone breast implants being FDA approaved.??

  67. Hey John,

Free silicone can shift and does create benign tumors called siliconomas…silicone breast implants have siliocne that is contained within a capsule…not the same thing as injecting silicone directly into tissue.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  68. Dear Dr. Francis R Palmer,

I’m 42 years old now. I read all your explanation to many patients from the internet. I hope you will have a little time for me too.

I had the howllen cheek before and had the silicon injected on my cheek 9 years ago. The injection was a small cut inside my mouth and injected silicon there. I have not known if that procedue was implant or injection. I didn’t know how much silicon he implant but I still can feel the size of it right after the injection. It’s as big as a size of a nut. Until now I haven’t had any problem with that expect the form my cheek almost come back as before. I’m wondering if the silicon absorbed in my body. Last year I had Radiesse injection again to correct the howllen cheek again from other doctors. After the injection, I did some research about Radiesse. Some website said “Radiesse should not be implanted in patients with other implants or materials still in place.” Radiesse should not be implanted in patients with other implants or materials still in place”. Thanks God, nothing has happened to me yet.

After reading all the information through the internet and your explanation about silicon, I’m really scare. Now in my face, I have Silicon & Radiesse at the same area. Would you please give me a suggestion how I can fix it? Will the Silicon and Radiesse cause me a problem soon? Please give me an answer Dr. Francis.

    Many Thanks, T.L

  69. TL,

Radiesse should not be an issue as it is injected within the fatty layers of the face. If you have concerns ask the plastic and cosmetic surgeon that’s doing the Radiesse injections and/or the plastic surgeon that did the silicone injection. It sounds like you had an implant placed through an intra-oral incision 9 years ago but only the plastic and cosmetic surgeon that did the cheek augmentation with cheek implants or by siliocne tissue injections would know for sure…ask him/her or try to get your medical records for your own knowledge.

  70. Hello Doc,
I was looking into getting sillicone injections in my butt. Is that a good place to get them? Is there an alternative to getting sillicone to make my but larger?

  71. Chandra,

There are well documented…you can google them under silicone complications…so I don’t recommend that approach. Fat or Buttock Implants are other options.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  72. Hello Dr. Palmer,

Do you work with transgender patients as far as facial feminization goes? If so, may I send you close-ups of my face and would you be kind enough to let me know what procedures you recommend? Thank you.

    Jenifer

  73. Jenifer,

Yes, I have feminized the face of numerous transgender patients from all over the world. Of course, you can e-mail photos to me at drfpalmer1@aol.com as well as schedule a phone consult during which you and I discuss my recommendations. You may contact my office staff at the e-mail listed above, or schedule an in person consultation at 310-652-9583.

  74. Hi

I’m considering getting scrotal silicon injections to make my testicles look larger. I can’t seem to find much documented on the internet about the implications of this - please can you tell me if this is very risky… I don’t want them huge - just larger!
    Thanks, Daniel.

  75. Hello,

I had lip injection 1.5 years ago. I have recently noticed there are two little whitish lumps under my upper lip. I called the person who had done the injection. She said she had used Juviderm! but I doute it. I’ve heard juviderm lasts for a short period.

Now he wants to inject kenalog to absorb the lumps. Should I go for it? Please advise.

    Thanks
    Sherry

  76. Sherry,

Juviderm should not last that long in the lips. Ask to see the label from the Juviderm syringe you were injected with. It should be in your chart. You could also have a dermatologist biopsy one of the lumps and send it to pathoology to find out what it is. You may want another opinion with a dermatologist or plastic and cosmetic surgeon in your area before having kenalog shots to the lips.

    Dr. Francis Palmer

  77. Ouch! Can’t imagine injecting silicone in the scrotum. I’m not a fan of silicone injected anywhere…but I have no clue as to what to tell you. You could ask a Urologist for recommendations.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  78. So, I am young, 30- and 2 years ago I had a small amount of silicone injected in my lips- I loved it so much I went back a bout 5 months ago and had it done again despite the horrible stories I heard- I thought- a little won’t hurt and the surgeon assured me it was ok- That he has even injected his own mother more than several times with silicone. After reading these stories- I am HORRIFIED! I am only 30. does deformation or migration happen to everyone who has it or to just some select people? Do you know the odds? I will never have it done again- believe me. But let me ask- I still need more plumping in the lips- what can I use to plump them since I have silicone? Will i ever be able to use anything else or am I just stuck with what I have?

  79. Dr., I had something called “Boigel” injected into my lips to plump them about 8 weeks ago. I was told its permanent and that you can’t have an allergic reaction to it. SHe said ti was a scilicone gel filler and it shrinks a little after 10 yrs. have you heard anything about this?

  80. Lauren,

If this is silicone…it’s siliocne no matter how it’s packaged or presented. You may want clarification by the person who injected your lips…reference and product materials especially in the wake of the recent story about industrial grade silicone being injected by a doctor from Argentina. There are numerous comments and an article on silicone and it’s potential risks and problems contained in this blog. You can also find many such articles through a google search on silicone complications.

  81. Hi, Doctor
I made a big mistake 3 weeks ago,I was in South America and I had silicone injection in my lateral smiles lines total of 2.5 cc
Now I am terrified after reading all the reports. I can’t sleep I can’t think I don’t know what to do.

  82. Maria,

There’s nothing that you can do at this point. 2.5cc’s is a large amount of silicone in the marrionette lines. You might consider seing a dermatologist in your area and ask him/her if they are willing to place some steroid and or try to microlipo out some of the silicone that was placed 3 weeks ago. I’m not certain either of those things woiuld help but you should see some physician to examine you and follow you should problems arise wih the silicone. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  83. I’m a 60 year male. 6 years ago my wife took to me to a place in Colombia to have her and my lips injected. It was a oil substance and the so called Doctor said it would last up to 5 years. Now after 6 years I found out it is Silicone. The inside of my lower lip has 2 lumps and little white bumps. My lip hangs on one side more than the other. I went to Dermatolgist and he injected both bumps with a cortizon. He said if it goes down in 2-3 weeks it worked. If not there is no way to reduce it. Since it is in the inside of my lip, can I have them removed or reduced even though it will leave a scar? No one will notice unless I pull my lip down.

  84. Mike,

You can have the lumps surgically removed. I’d have to see your lips to determine the extent of that surgery. Please tell everyone that will listen not to have silicone injections. Alloderm lipa ugmentation works great, lasts for 7 years and has none of the issues of silicone.

  85. DO STEROID INJECTIONS WORK TO REMOVE RADIESSE

  86. Jennifer,

Reportedly it does but I have never done this. You might contact the company rep thru your doctors office for more information.

  87. I was wondering….

I’ve had silicone injected into my chest (about a b cup), but I’d like to go a lot larger. I’m considering implants, but I’m not sure if implants are a possibility now? If so, who to go to for them?

  88. I had a lip lift also known as lip advancement lip augmentation done 2 years ago. A lip iift requires an incision along the border of the upper lip. Once the incision is made the doctor removes a tiny strip of skin where the upper and lower lip meets. The lip edge is then pulled taut and stitched into it’s new position. (I have NO fillers, injectables or implants in my lips.) My problem is they FEEL hard but are not hard to the touch. (When I smile, they are soft when they stretch and they are soft when I touch them.) They just don’t feel soft. Do you know why this is and what could be done to get them soft?? (It feels awful when I talk.)

  89. Theresa,

Yes, I’ve done these lip advancements but I’ve not heard of the lips feeling hard at 2 years post lip augmentation and advancement. Can’t really be much as the lip advancement is done just as you described with 2, maybe 3 mm’s of skin excised and the lip edges closed. It could be scar but it might just be the sensation of the lip mucosa being stretched by the procedure itself.

  90. I desperately need my buttocks to be enlarged. i was really considering the silicone injections, however, i will adhere to the doc’s warnings. I cannot afford implants. Doc are there any other types of injections that i could get. Please help.

  91. Tessa,

I’m afraid not at the moment. If you can’t afford the implants, my advice would be to wait until something comes along with less chance of adverse side effects. In my opinion, silicone is just not worth the potential risk. Have you considered fat transplantation…if you have areas of excess fat, this could be an option. The fat may not last forever, but it doesn’t carry the potential risks of silicone injections.

  92. Is PMMA a good substance to inject in the butt to make it bigger. It has been tested on HIV patients and found to be safe.

  93. I’ve always felt that my chin has been short. I’d like to lengthen it vertically about 6-8mm with an injectable filler. I’ve considered Bio-Alcamid because it is permanent but is it safe to use? I’ve already seen two doctors in canada (where i live) who simply wont lengthen my chin. one offered to lengthen it with an implant but he said hed only take it 4mm down. I know bioalcamid is typically used for patients who have hiv but can it be used for chin augmentation?

  94. I have metacryl injected in my upper lip two years ago and I have been very unhappy since. The main problem is that the substance is not stable and my lip can easily get swollen which makes me look like a monster, and I get very depressed. Also, the uuper right side has formed a little granuloma which makes the right side a bit bigger. Is there any remedy to prevent the inflammation and/or possibilty of the removal? Thanks

  95. im thinking about getting a hip injection with silicon and i want to know is that dangerous and i’m a woman.

  96. Pam,

The risks of silicone injections are all over the web. Please do some research and make your own opinion. I do not do silicone injections because of the potential risks.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  97. Ljuba,

Can’t have it removed as this would likely cause severe and permanent lip disfigurement. You might be able to remove the granuloma and reduce the lip with lip surgery but this WILL NOT prevent other areas of the lip from do the same thing.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  98. Lani,

I’d listen to the plastic and cosmetic surgeons that you are seeing about the size of the augmentation of the chin. You can decide what’s aesthetically correct in the following manner. On profile draw an imaginary straight line down from your lower lip. A man’s chin should meet that line while a woman’s should be slightly behind the line. I have removed Bioalchamid from cheeks that patients had injected in Europe that they didn’t like the look or it was aesthetically incorrect (which is the major issue with fillers, especially permanent ones in my opinion). You should consider Radiesse or a chin implant as I am just not a big fan of permanent fillers….something goes lumpy, bumpy etc and it’s there forever? No thanks!

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  99. OK… SO IM IN TRANSITION FROM MTF AND DECIDED TO GET SILICONE INJECTED INTO MY CHEEKS… I ONLY GOT A VERY SMALL SMALL AMOUNT, BUT KNOW AFTER READING SO MUCH STUFF I CAN’T STOP CRYING… WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS HERE, I HAVE ONLY HAD IT DONE A WEEK.

  100. My friend recently had silicon injected in her butt, to make it more round and fuller. It looks great and I want it done. But the sound of injected yourself with silicone doesn’t sound safe to me. Is it ok if you have it injected there? And if not what would be a safer alternative?

  101. Krystal Lynn,

NO, sorry it’s not safe in my opinion and you can do a quick Google search on silicone complications for FYI.

    Dr. Palmer

  102. Hi Dr.,
I was just reading your site. I hear you telling people not to inject silicone in cheeks, chin, lips. I know this is probably a dumb question but is there any exception for the nose? i have been having radiesse injected in the nose to even out a crummy rhinoplasty. It’s getting expensive - and it hurts! I know there is a dr that is recommending silicone. Is it safer in the nose? Thx.

  103. Dee,

This isn’t a silly question at all and in fact the answer is yes. The one accepted application for silicone injections has always been to even out aesthetic issues post Rhinoplasty. However, it’s still recommended to use micro-droplets and have repeated injections for the final result. Good luck.

  104. hello,
we purchase a silicon, who will used for acne scars, and tell me price for this injection & u have no silicon then tell me where is silicon phone & address

  105. i want to look more femimine in my lower half. is it possible for me to get a procedure done in my hips and butt. some form of injections. i feel like a boy i want to look more like a woman.

  106. Omain,

    I don’t recommend silicone injections, so I can’t help you I’m afraid.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  107. Olivia,

This is an active area of research in aesthetic medicine, plastic and cosmetic surgery. Currently, you can have buttock implants or autologous fat transfer.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  108. hello Dr. I recently went to tijuana and i had silicone injection im butt, I did not know anything of the risks and consequences, until I started to feel so much pain in my lower legs, it feels like that liquid has migrated different places in my legs it so painful and very uncofortable, ladies out there please dont do this to your body.
I had cried alot, is the worst thing you can do to your body.
Dr. you think I can get some help from you to remove this liquid.

  109. Andrea,

Sadly, no. Once the silicone is injected, it can’t be completely removed. I suggest you see a rheumatologist that specializes in Silicone disoders…check your local medical center for a referral.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  110. Dera Dr,
30 years ago after a phenol peel for some sun spot i was left with some bandage scaring, My Beverly Hills MD injected my face with silacone to minimize the bandage scares. Now years leater i still have little bumps under my skin. My dermotoligist says that she can “break” them up a bit with a needle apparently, make them less noticeabl.> do you think that this is a good way to go about it and what are the possibly down side to this procedeure?
    thank you susan

  111. Susan,

I’m not sure what effect using a needle to break up the silicone nodules would have but if it doesn’t leave you even more lumpy afterwards, might be worth a try. You should be prepared for more lumps as I see that as the primary drawback to that line of treatment.

    Dr Francis R Palmer, III

  112. Dear Dr. Palmer,

I am one of the many victims of the now-unlicensed Dr., whom the FDA contacted me regarding (he had been injecting hundreds of patients, like myself, with silicone, despite an injunction banning him from doing so.) Six years ago, he misdiagnosed my post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (secondary to Addison’s disease and prior bouts of acne) as atrophic/depressed acne scars, due to the optical illusion that dark scars create under bright light.

As a result, I allowed him to treat me with “Adatosil”, which he said would fix my problem. It only aggravated it. I have approximately 100 injections in my face, and they are all raised bumps. He did give me three separate rounds of steroid injections, which brought down the bumps temporarily. Once I realized that I’d have to get these injections three times per year for the rest of my life, I panicked and asked him if this was the case, to which he said, “No… the skin likes to lie flat.” Well, it has not remained flat since my last round of injections, five years ago. I have been unable to find a Dr. who is familiar with silicone complications that would be willing/able to properly administer such steroid injections. I live in Huntington Beach, Ca.

    My questions for you:
    1. Is Kenalog most likely tantamount to the steroid injections I received earlier? If so, does it really “break up” the silicone, or merely cause the swelling/nodule to depress temporarily?
    2. I have heard of people in my situation getting Co2 peels to aspirate silicone; I may want to get one anyway… what do you think?
    3. Would you be able to administer steroid injections as mentioned above, or do you think you coud do anything else for my silicone problems? Yes, I’m willing to brave the 405 to get to you!
    4. Barring question 3, do you know of any O.C. Docs that are experienced in this area (silicone complications)?

Thank you so much! I’m relieved to know that you are out there, and so nearby.
    Jenna

  113. Jenna,

I’d have to see your face in person to make specific recommendations. You can contact my office at 310-652-9583 or e-mail them at drfpalmer1@aol.com

Kenalog decreases the inflammation caused by the silicone that was injected but also melts the normal fatty tissue in the face. Not sure about CO2 Laser which takes the top layer of skin off the face….if the silicone is deeper within the skin which is likely, this would have only modest effect.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  114. hi…
im a very pettite person 5′1 extremley slim..im on a course to gain wegiht and muscle but i feel that will not be enough to give me the body i want… i have been thinking alot about palstic srugery….Breast/ buttox…but i have come to an agreement withmyself to use enhancment pills first for my breast…. but i have heard about silicon injections for the buttox…but isee that that is not as convinient….what other alternatives do i have for buttox and thighs??? i want to look like women but not dig my own grave….

    thanks

  115. Neve,

Right now today’s technology limits your options to buttock implants (I’m not a fan) and Breast Implants that work quite well. You of course can try supplements, hormones and the like but I ‘d expect very limited results.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  116. So what do you recommend for buttox? What supplements/ hormones…I do not trust doctors in this area….they advertise silicone….i dont trust thier proffessionality…

  117. i had silicon injections on my cheeks and i would like to ask if it wont cause any bad effect if i undergo fraxel treatment.pls help.thanks.

  118. Neve,

That’s out of my area of expertise.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  119. Lovely,

Ask the plastic and cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist that did the silicone injections or is planning on doing the face Fraxel laser treatment for their advice…but it most likely should not effect the silicone, which I’m sure you know that I’m not in favor of doing in the first place.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III

  120. Dear Dr.

About 10 years ago I had silicone injected into my hips and buttocks. It use to look great, since turning 40 that area is starting to look uneven and lumpy.

Is there any possibility to remove the silicone or at least some. I would be happy removing some from my hips and buttock area. Dr. is it possible to remove the silicone with with liposuction?

  121. Sylvia,

The silicone perse can’t be removed however if you have excess fat on the hips Liposuction can remove the fat and some of the silicone that’s within that fat. There’s no guarantee that you will be less bumpy because the silicone is injected within the layers of the skin or just below the skin…areas that Liposuction does not effect.

Liposuction rarely is performed over the buttocks as it tends to make indentations and bumps, so I’m not sure you want that. I’d have to see photos or you in person to make further comments. You can e-mail photos to my staff at drfpalmer1@aol.com or call 310-652-9583 to schedule a consultation.

You know from reading my blog that I’m not a fan of silicone injections and don’t believe that they should be used for face or body shaping. I do believe very small amounts can be used in the nose after Rhinoplasty in very select cases, but that’s it.

    Dr. Francis R Palmer, III
